The amount of community spirit we are seeing during these uncertain times is truly amazing. Community Lincs, part of YMCA Lincolnshire Good Neighbour Scheme Team is here to support you to support your neighbours and your community.

We currently work with many communities across Lincolnshire who have or are developing Good Neighbour Schemes. These are constituted groups that provide support to their neighbours.

We have recently assisted the setting up of the Mablethorpe, Trusthorpe and Sutton on Sea Good Neighbour Scheme. They approached Community Lincs for help and we assisted in developing a Residents’ Survey which went to every household in the area. On 25th March the scheme went live.

With our support, a small dedicated working group began to put together the foundations of the scheme. The results of the Residents Survey produced 54 people who initially expressed a desire to help and a Committee was formed.

With the impending likelihood of lock down becoming inevitable, the Committee worked hard to get a Constitution, a Safeguarding Policy and Volunteer procedures in place, together with a Confidentiality Statement. Initially the aim was offer to shop for vulnerable residents, collect prescriptions and offer a befriending service.

With lock down and forced isolation, the number of potential volunteers was greatly reduced, but 14 volunteers were available for practical tasks, with further self-isolating volunteers available to take phone calls and carryout befriending phone calls. All volunteers are fully insured and provided with training and ID badges.

By the end of April, 150 residents registered for the scheme, with over 200 requests for shopping, over 100 prescriptions collected and over 60 residents receiving regular befriending calls. The scheme has worked closely with the Marisco Patient Participation Group and has received financial assistance from them, along with Sutton on Sea Residents Association, Alford and Mablethorpe Rotary Association, Churches Together and a grant from Horncastle and District Health and Wellbeing.

Following the Coronavirus pandemic, the GNS would like to offer an increased range of tasks to local residents. You can contact the scheme on 07311 470866 or email mablethorpeandsuttongng@gmail.com

Hogsthorpe Good Neighbour Scheme

Hogsthorpe Volunteers Group contacted Community Lincs, part of YMCA Lincolnshire for support to develop a Good Neighbour Scheme.

The group was initially set up in response to the Covid-19 pandemic to offer support to the residents of Hogsthorpe. It consists of 24 volunteers who are carrying out a range of tasks including telephone befriending, shopping trips, collecting prescriptions, supplying fruit and vegetables at the village hall, operating a food bank for those in need, offering free jigsaws and a book exchange.

The group is keen to maintain this offer of support into the future, hence the interest in setting up a Good Neighbour Scheme in Hogsthorpe. They have already been successful in obtaining funding to take the project forward and intend to work in partnership with the Parish Council and the Church.
